Goals of Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is designed to help both partners understand what’s getting in the way and causing unhealthy cycles of communication while learning new ways to show up for each other.

In couples therapy we focus on:

  • Strengthening emotional connection

  • Improving communication patterns that lead to conflict

  • Restoring intimacy and closeness

  • Creating a shared path forward that feels good for both partners

The goal isn’t only fewer arguments or less conflict, but a relationship that feels safe, supportive, and fulfilling.

Because you both deserve a relationship where you feel understood, valued, and connected.

Couples Therapy Approach

I use Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT),

along with trauma-informed strategies to help you both understand what’s behind disconnection and build healthier ways of communicating and supporting each other.

Sessions are structured and active, with tools you’ll practice between sessions so progress continues at home. Most couples begin noticing improvements within a few weeks, and treatment typically lasts 10–20 sessions, depending on your goals.

You Deserve a Relationship
Where You Feel Understood and Supported

IBCT helps couples move from stuck patterns to shared understanding, creating space for healing, resilience, and lasting connection. Below is what to expect:

Assessment Phase

We begin with a thorough evaluation of your relationship history, strengths, challenges, and goals. This includes joint and individual sessions for each partner.

Feedback and Case Formulation

You’ll receive a personalized summary of what’s driving distress in the relationship, along with a clear plan for how therapy will help. We focus on patterns—not blame—and build insight into how each partner’s behavior and emotional needs interact.

Therapy focuses on two key strategies:

+ Acceptance-based work to foster empathy, emotional attunement, and deeper understanding.

+ Behavioral change strategies to improve communication, reduce conflict, and increase positive connection.

Ongoing Refinement

As therapy progresses, we adapt the approach based on your goals, feedback, and what’s working—always with a focus on measurable change and meaningful growth.

Who It’s For

This service is designed for couples who are feeling disconnected or overwhelmed by the impact of trauma, stress, or major life transitions. I work with diverse couples, including partners where one or both individuals are trauma survivors, first responders, healthcare providers, or military personnel and veterans navigating PTSD.

However, if you’re working with me individually, I’m not able to provide couples therapy to you and your partner. This helps protect the integrity of the therapeutic relationship and avoid potential bias—ensuring that care remains ethical, balanced, and effective for everyone involved.

FAQs

Couples Therapy | Minnesota or Online

  • Even when trauma affects just one partner, it can impact how both people communicate, connect, and cope.  Couples therapy offers a structured, supportive space to understand those dynamics and strengthen the relationship.

  • Yes. I offer premarital counseling that’s grounded in evidence-based practices and informed by an understanding of how past trauma can shape present relationships. Whether one or both partners have experienced trauma, we’ll work together to build communication skills, strengthen emotional safety, and align your values and goals for the future. This isn’t just about preparing for marriage—it’s about creating a resilient foundation for connection, trust, and growth.

  • Yes. I offer secure online couples therapy to clients across PSYPACT-participating states. If you live outside Minnesota but reside in a PSYPACT state, you're likely eligible to receive virtual care. This allows couples to access evidence-based couples therapy from the comfort of home, with the same structure, support, and clinical expertise you'd receive in person. Feel free to reach out to confirm your eligibility.

  • It depends on your goals. Some couples benefit from a focused, short-term approach which typically lasts 10-20 sessions. Others may choose to continue therapy beyond that to strengthen communication, deepen connection, or work toward new goals. Together, we’ll tailor the length and structure of therapy to fit your needs as a couple.

  • While I work with many couples navigating challenges, I do not provide couples therapy when infidelity is a current or recent concern.

Ready to Move Forward, Together?
